Each school has its own standards for assessing the reading speed of a first grader . On average, at the end of the first half of the year, the child should read 20-30 words per minute, while the reading technique during this period is not evaluated. By the end of the year, this figure rises to 40 words. Most schools do not give marks to first graders; the result can be either positive or negative.
