Technically, the Internet itself is also a hypertext, but most often this term is used in relation to individual works with a system of links inside. The effect of hypertext on the reading brain, as you would expect, is receiving a fair amount of scholarly attention. In 2005, psychologists Diana DeStefano and Jo-Anne Lefevre analyzed 38 studies of hypertext. Their goal was to assess the cognitive load that hypertext creates. Scientists have concluded that it is really difficult for a person to wade through the text in search of links, evaluate each of them and choose the right one. Carr used this result as confirmation of his own idea: the Internet makes us dumber.
