Describe the Transport of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide in the Blood

Transport of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

Transport of oxygen:

Oxygen is transported in two ways:

  1. i) Through plasma only small amount of oxygen is dissolved in hemoglobin.

  1. ii) Through hemoglobin 20 ml oxygen is transported in 100 ml hemoglobin.

Transport of carbon dioxide:

Carbon dioxide is transported by 3 ways:

  1. i) It is transported in the form of bicarbonate ions mostly bonded with water.

  1. ii) Through hemoglobin 25% of carbon dioxide combines with hemoglobin to form carbamino compound.

iii) 6% of carbon dioxide is simply dissolved in the blood.
