Indeed, for China, winning the European market would be part of a broader strategy of weakening American power on the Old Continent. With 5G, Beijing would win a market representing a financial windfall, but could also create a link, if not a dependency, of European states having chosen it to the detriment of the American competitor.
If Europe is aware of being a stake, it does not yet present a united front on the question. In particular, the member countries have different positions vis-ร -vis Huawei. Some, like the UK, prohibit the adoption of Chinese technology. Others, like France, adopt a middle position: they exclude it from sensitive sectors such as those linked to national defence, but offer limited access.
