Home education is largely in the minority in France, since it concerns nearly 50,000 children out of 12.4 million students* . In the country, it is education, not schooling, that the Jules Ferry law of 1882 makes compulsory. It concerns children from 3 to 16 years old. However, parents have the right to choose their mode of instruction, in a public school, private, or at home. In the latter case, the children may or may not follow the courses of the National Center for Distance Education (CNED).

There are many reasons for home schooling, starting with the lifestyle of parents, who, depending on their work, cannot always spend time with their children.
