Compare Business Schools
Which school is the leader in graduating MBA students in consulting?ย According to a survey of 4,500 consultants sponsored by Vault.com, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management received the palm.ย Harvard Business School, whose teaching methods were developed specifically for consulting, is in second place.ย Chicago, Wharton and Michigan schools are in the top 5 respectively.
But is Kellogg really the best of the best? Probably not. There is a good chance that Harvardย wouldย have won first place if the prestigiousย McKinsey & Co.ย took part in the survey.ย McKinsey has been one ofย Harvardย ‘s top employers for many yearsย , and employs more MBA graduates than any other firmย .ย However ,ย Vaultย acknowledges that only 20ย McKinseyย consultants responded to questions via the social networkย LinkedInย .
For example, among the 2009 graduates, McKinsey recruitedย 50ย Whartonย , 46ย Columbiaย , 26ย Kelloggย , 23ย Chicagoย , 21ย Londonย , 15ย Berkeleyย , and 10ย Michiganย .ย Although Harvard did not release these statistics, there is evidence thatย McKinseyย employed about a hundred Harvard graduates in the 2009 academic year alone.ย Therefore, the absence of world-famous consultants in the survey casts a shadow on the accuracy of the data.ย Vaultย Education Editor-in-Chiefย Carolyn Wise agrees thatย McKinseyis a home for Harvard students and a very reliable employer for Harvard MBAs.
In contrast, in 2009 the Boston Consulting Groupย employed 31 applicants fromย Whartonย , 23 fromย Kelloggย , 21 fromย Columbiaย , 10 fromย Londonย , 9 fromย Chicagoย , 5 fromย Michiganย and 4 fromย Berkeleyย .ย Another prestigious consulting company,ย Bain,ย hosted 20ย Columbiaย , 19ย Kelloggย , 18ย Whartonย , 16ย Chicagoย , 10ย Michiganย and 6ย London alumniย .
Vault also processed data for cities and regions in the United States of America. For example, in Silicon Valley,ย Stanfordย is the leader , followed byย Berkeley’sย Haasย School of Businessย ,ย MITย ‘sย Sloan Schoolย , and, surprisingly,ย Michiganย ‘sย Ross School of Businessย .ย In the southwestern states,ย Emory’s Goizueta School of Business andย Harvardย School compete for leadership in consulting.ย โThe Emory school has a strong presence in Atlanta and Charlotte,โ says Ms. Wise.
Conclusion? According to Ms. Wise, the fact remains that the top 10 business schools produce the lion’s share of consultants.ย โIt was a swift turn of events.ย After the top 10, and then 14 schools, growth stopped.ย The biggest disappointment for me is the rapid capture of positions by prestigious business schools.ย Diplomas from less significant MBA programs have ceased to be valued.ย If you want to get a job at a prestigious consulting firm, then you should aim for the most reputed business school.โ
One thing to keep in mind before looking through the list that follows: Vault did not take into account the size of the MBA programs, although its ranking is only the result of the total number of business school graduates involved in the consulting industry. As a result,ย Dartmouthย ,ย MITย , andย Stanfordย , whose annual elite MBA graduations are significantly lower, are not keeping up with giant schools such asย Harvard.
