How to learn to read quickly
Fast reading has become overgrown with a gigantic amount of myths. In books about great people – about Balzac, Lenin, Kennedy, Roosevelt and others – they write that they had the ability to understand the meaning of the text on the page in a few seconds. They learned it themselves. Alas, there is too little information left about exactly how they read.
This is one of the reasons for the misconceptions associated with speed reading. For example, such that this technique boils down to quickly flipping through pages and does not help to properly understand the essence of the text. In fact, this is not the case: the human brain is able to read and memorize 100% of the text of about three pages (6000 characters without spaces) in a minute.
The next myth: the human brain is able to assimilate the material of a gigantic volume in just a minute. This mythical ability is sometimes referred to as PhotoReading. And although both speed reading and Photo Reading exist in reality, they allow you to remember 6,000 characters in a minute, but not 600,000.
Another myth: there is a certain magic trick, using which, you can read much faster without any training. In fact, the speed reading technique is a whole complex of methods and techniques for accelerated reading and perception of the text. And they all need to be worked out in practice.
Please note that this is not only about very quick gaze line by line. This skill is important in itself, but it does not guarantee high-quality assimilation of the text. But is it really effective to read a text and not understand or remember anything in it? Therefore, I really like the second name for speed reading – effective work with information. It better captures the essence of fast reading and the practical techniques that we will look at next.
