Simmonds was born and raised in the state of Utah, which is a territory of the United States. She calls the city of Bountiful in Utah her home. She has four family members, two of whom are older and two of whom are younger than she is.

Because of an accidental overdose of medication, Simmonds lost her hearing when she was only one year old. Her mother became fluent in American Sign Language and urged the rest of the family to do the same so that they could communicate with her.

She started attending the Jean Massieu School of the Deaf when Simmonds was only three years old, and she quickly became involved with the school’s dramatisation group while she was there. After completing the sixth grade, she entered the junior high school on a regular basis in the autumn of 2015 at Mueller Park Junior High School.

Her primary cinematic experience before to Wonderstruck was as a hard of hearing understudy in “Shading the World,” which she appeared in at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah. After the success of the movie adaptation of A Quiet Place in February 2019, Simmonds began discussions with the development team to continue her role in the sequel, which is now under production.
