After graduating from Trinity High School, where she captained the volleyball and basketball teams, Shahi continued her education at Southern Methodist University, where she majored in English and Theater. During her stay at SMU, she was an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega fraternity. In 1997, Shahi was crowned the winner of the Miss Fort Worth competition. Even though she had never cheered before, she decided to try out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (1999–2000) team in order to prepare herself for a career as an actor. After that, she relocated to the city of Los Angeles.

Shahi met director Robert Altman when she was working as an extra on the arrangement Dr. T and the Women in Texas.
