As a member of the elite group of Russell Universities, we are a dynamic, research-intensive university committed to creating life-changing discoveries and new technologies to solve the world’s most pressing problems.
At present, there are more than 30 academic departments and research centers, and the number of students has increased to 18,000.
In 2014, in consultation with all staff and students, Vice Chancellor Cohen Lamberts led the development of a new university strategy. This strategy will guide and inform our activities until 2020.

Our safe and attractive Heslington campus, located within walking distance of York city centre, is home to our nine colleges and most of our departments. We also have several departments located in the city center in the historical estate of the king.
In recent years, as part of our £500 million campus expansion, seven new buildings have opened, increasing our capacity for student numbers and providing more world-class facilities for the 21st century. Sustainability plays a key role in this ambitious development.
When describing how a university works, it is important to understand that there is a difference between how it is run and how it is run.
All universities have a governing body that is responsible for overseeing their activities, determining their future direction, and monitoring progress towards strategic ambitions. The governing body of the university is the Council.
The Board is also responsible for ensuring our financial stability and meeting our legal obligations. Makes the final decision on issues that have a significant impact on the university
While the Council serves as an observer and oversight body as the governing body, it delegates the operational activities of the University to an acting Vice-Chancellor and President.
The Acting Vice Chancellor and President carry out their duties with the support of their senior colleagues, who meet twice a month as the university’s executive board.
