Chlorophyll is Essential for Photosynthesis

 

  1. i) De-starch a leaf of potted plant by wrapping it in aluminum foil.

 

  1. ii) Remove the leaf from plant.

 

iii) Its outline is carefully drawn to note the position of chlorophyll.

 

  1. iv) Now apply iodine to leaf to test the presence of starch.

 

  1. v) We observe that parts with iodine turn blue while white part turn brown.

 

  1. vi) This result shows that starch is formed in only those parts where chlorophyll exists.

 

vii) If photosynthesis is possible without chlorophyll than white part should also turn blue.
