Online learning has revolutionized higher education as it offers many benefits. As an online student, you can study at your own pace and at your convenience at a much lower cost.
But studying for an online degree can also raise some questions and concerns. This is a new and unknown experience, so it’s natural to be unsure of what to expect and how this process will unfold.
While your student advisor will guide you through the entire process in advance and guide you through every step from first contact to graduation, we also offer the following summary as an introduction to online learning.
Your classes will take place online. You can log in at any time convenient for you. Once online, you will communicate with your teachers and classmates, read assigned texts, access digital materials, post assignments, and comment on other students’ assignments. While you should log in at least two different days a week, you will certainly benefit greatly from visiting regularly and more frequently.
Your online course will be delivered using an advanced learning management system designed to provide optimal student learning. In addition to an educational platform that you will use to communicate with faculty and fellow students, you will also have access to e-textbooks offering you the ability to highlight, annotate, bookmark, search, download, and self-assess.
Each module is carefully planned to meet the expectations for the depth and breadth of learning required to earn rewards at a given level. In accordance with international agreements, each award is expressed as a number of credits in order to make the achievement accessible and transparent to future employers and other higher education institutions. When planning learning activities within each program, the average student is expected to spend approximately ten hours of total study time earning 1 “credit” (this approximation includes all prep work, reading, writing, assessment assignments, time spent communicating in discussion forums or attending virtual seminars and workshops). For example, a candidate participating in a 20-credit module that lasts eight weeks can be expected to will devote an average of 25 hours of study time each week (200 hours total) to achieve module learning outcomes and complete assessment. . While there is no hard and fast rule on this (for example, each candidate will have a unique profile in terms of the time it takes them to read and understand course materials or complete written work), the following list of tasks can help you understand how much time is needed to successful completion of your program:
As part of a typical module, candidates will be required each week to:
Schedule your study time according to the weekly activity plan outlined in the module and guided by the instructor.
Read case studies and background material from e-books and other sources
Participate in discussion forums by reading materials, making contributions and answering specific questions
Prepare preparatory tasks that have been set (for example, submit a draft answer to a feedback question)
Prepare written assignments and submit them by the deadline for formal marking and feedback (this is not usually a weekly task, but may be required, usually at the end of the module)
Reflect on your learning and share your module experience with instructors and peers.
Like a classroom on campus, online learning will involve active participation and interaction with faculty and fellow students. You will also use the online forum to communicate with consultants, assistants and teachers.
Once you have successfully completed your degree, you will be eligible to participate in one of the two annual graduation ceremonies at Liverpool John Muras University.
Module sequences start multiple times a year depending on demand, so you have the option to enroll and start your study program more than once during the year, giving you flexibility not often found in most full-time programs.
You will be taking one module at a time. Designed for adults, this advanced learning method allows you to focus on one subject area before moving on to another, and also allows you to complete your degree in an accelerated time frame.
The degree you receive will have the same value, recognition, and authority as any equivalent degree earned in a traditional campus environment.
