HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

Many, probably, thought about studying in the country of bicycles, canals and countless tulips. The country, located in northwestern Europe, attracts about 25,000 international students every year. .

WHY IS IT WORTH GETTING HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS?

The Netherlands is home to some of the most prestigious universities in the world. Almost all 14 public universities are among the top 200 in the world ranking of the university. In addition, Dutch universities are very internationally oriented. Most undergraduate courses in the Netherlands are taught in English, so you don’t have to learn Dutch first. As for master’s courses, more than 70% of them are in English. But in the international comparison, not only universities shine, but also 40 state technical colleges (“University of Applied Sciences”). They are not so much theoretical as practical.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS?

Studying in the Netherlands has many advantages – well-known and modern universities, a relaxed selection process and proximity to Germany make the Netherlands attractive to students. Of course, due to the high tuition fees, you have to swallow first, but if you are knowledgeable about the financing options, this can be done easily.

EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS: ADVANTAGES AND ADVANTAGES

Basic information about the benefits of education in the Netherlands.

The parliamentary monarchy of the Netherlands is a country bordering the North Sea, which otherwise borders Germany and Belgium. With an area of just over 41,000 km², it is half the size of Austria, but with a population of about 16.5 million people, the country has twice as many inhabitants. Due to lack of space, the country has long been trying to reclaim land from the North Sea with the help of dams. About a quarter of the country’s territory is below sea level. The highest point of the kingdom is Mount Scenery with a height of 877 meters – but this is on the Caribbean island of Saba.

The capital is Amsterdam, but the seat of government is in The Hague. The official language is Dutch. However, in the province of Friesland, Frisian is also an official language. The Netherlands is a founding member of the EU and has adopted the euro as its currency since its inception. Amesterdam is the perfect place to study in the Netherlands.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

There are mainly four types of higher education institutions in the Netherlands:

“Universities”: as the almost identical spelling suggests, these are Universities. Here you get a scientific education. There are full-fledged universities, as well as technical and economic universities.

“Hogenscholen”: The focus here is on practice-oriented learning. This type of university education can be compared very well with Austrian universities of applied sciences. There are courses in different disciplines.

“International Onderwijs”: very popular among international students. Almost everything is taught in English. However, the individual courses offered by the institutes are very expensive.

“Open University”: not necessarily something for exchange students, because it is a distance learning university.

ADMISSION TO UNIVERSITIES IN THE NETHERLANDS FOR TRAINING.

Higher education in the Netherlands is relatively easy. All you have to do is do everything that your own university requires. If you want to get an education in the Netherlands in an undergraduate program, you will need a lot of time, patience and excellent organizational skills. There is a lot of paperwork ahead. Forms, proof of English proficiency, certificates, letters of recommendation, proof of financial resources, essays, and sometimes face-to-face interviews can make you sweat.

THE PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

Unlike, for example, another European country, Germany, the Netherlands does not have a numerus clausus. Despite local admissions restrictions, your high school grades play a secondary role in the selection process. Each course has different, subject-specific selection procedures and entry requirements, such as aptitude tests, language certificates, and specific courses within the school.

Courses taught in English often require a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge certificate. If you meet these requirements and add a good cover letter, you will generally be accepted into the program.

Only in rare cases is the number of study places limited and assigned numerus fixus. Unlike numerus clausus, tuition places are raffled off among applicants. Abi Level 3 has the same chance of a place at the university as Abi Level 1.

EVALUATION SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

The education assessment system in the Netherlands goes from 1 to 10. In principle, you need to get a 6 to pass the exam, but many universities also round up to 6 out of 5.5. Grades 9 and 10 are awarded very rarely and only for particularly outstanding achievements. Thus, most ratings are between 6 and 8, where 8 is very good.

THE COST OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

Universities in the Netherlands charge fees for higher education in Holland. This is about 1500 euros per semester. Of course, there are special rules for exchange programs.

HOW MUCH DOES HIGHER EDUCATION COST IN THE NETHERLANDS?

The cost of higher education in the Netherlands is higher than in Germany. For the 2018/19 academic year, 2060 euros are required. Every year, these fees increase slightly. Two thousand euros seems like a lot at first, but at universities you also notice where the money goes. Universities in the Netherlands are always up to date and equipped with the latest technology.

There are overcrowded classrooms and a lack of space in the university library is not a problem. You can always find a quiet place to study, and classes are usually held in small groups of a maximum of 20 people. This makes the whole learning process more relaxed and efficient.

VISA AND INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS IN THE NETHERLANDS

Students in the Netherlands are free to travel, live and work within the EU. You do not need a visa for this. Once you have found accommodation, you can go to the town hall and register there. You then receive a Dutch social security number (“Bürgerservicenummer – BSN”) with which you can work, open a bank account or apply for insurance. As a student in the Netherlands, you can keep your German health insurance.

However, if you want to find a job in Holland, you need Dutch health insurance. It costs around 100 € but can vary greatly depending on insurance and services. However, you can apply for a subsidy from the Dutch government of up to €95 depending on your income.

STAY TO STUDY IN THE NETHERLANDS

Since the Netherlands is part of the Schengen area, you will only need an ID card or passport to enter the country. If you want to stay in the country for more than three months, you need to obtain a residence permit from the police or immigration services.
